Giving Back

Since I moved to NYC I began thinking of  volunteering again. I really enjoyed it in the past when I helped out with Alzheimer's patients in Arizona. It was remarkable to see men and women who impacted society (from CEOs to high ranking officials who fought for our country, etc.). All they needed was some love and attention. I learned so much when I volunteered there.

One experience I will never forget was with this one gentleman whose wife came to visit as we were finishing lunch. She came over to him and as she gently stroked his face he came to life. I could swear that if we turned the lights off he would have provided enough light to illuminate the room. He was that enamored by her touch. He had been stripped of pretty much everything else, but he remembered her touch. Amazing. His eyes began to sparkle unlike anything else I have ever experienced.

For awhile I have thought of becoming a big sister. I recently found some listings for other volunteer work as well. One is to help out with bingo! This would be amazing, hahaha. I am also considering helping children after school with homework and reading to homeless children. After checking the listings I realize how much of a need there is in my community and how easy it is to be involved in our own lives without reaching out to others. Reaching out and helping others really does not take that much effort. I have been blessed in so many ways. To think that being able to read is a gift that I often take for granted makes me want to offer it to others.

I am really looking forward to these experiences.....
